Welcome to Manyore Farmstead

Manyore Farmstead is within an hour from Johannesburg, in Zeekoeihoek Magaliesburg. Manyore is a small scale farm, which will slowly grow into a permaculture farm focusing on African indigenous crops and animals and crops for self-sufficiency. Manyore is our way of changing the world in a positive way and we hope your stay will contribute to this journey. You are welcome for a farm stay!

Every last weekend of August we participate in Magalies Rocks the Cradle. In 2025 we again had a pop-up exhibition of Sidney Nyabeze and farm tours.

Forest and Farmland

Manyore is 5.7 ha large. A nice one km walking path takes you around the farm along different features.

Manyore still contains a lot of non-indigenous species. But that is what regeneration is for. We harvest as well the invasive species: black berries make delicious jam.

About 1.5 ha of forest is nice for walks in the shade or climbing a tree or forest bathing.

The arable land is about 2 ha clayey land and has an old irrigation channel running through it. As it has not been cropped for quite some years, currently it is grass land, with a variety of grasses.

Around the house there is about 0.5 ha garden area, with a beautiful view on a bushland hill.

An ideal spot, in between the biomes of highveld grasslands and savanna bushland, on a touristic road. The property is transformed into a permaculture farm with an indigenous food forest.

Get inspired

Kids and adults need to get out of town to see how beautiful and resourceful nature is. How it can give energy in this challenging world. How we can learn from it.

Our farmhouse is meant for time together, to connect and enjoy. In the front garden, there is space to kick a ball, there is a netball stand, and a zipline. If the kids want to built a hut, go for it! The kitchen is spacious enough for joined cooking.

There is a high quality book collection with mainly African writers and books full of inspiration for building a better society, learning to farm or appreciating Southern African plants or art.

Hook the hammock between the trees and read a book.

Enjoy the neighbourhood

During your stay you might want to enjoy outings in Magaliesburg and the Magalies mountains. Magalies name comes chief Kgosi Môgale Wa Môgale. This is a historic area with more than 2 million years of hominides, one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world and with Gauteng’s oldest gold mine.

Thatchwood Farm Pub is next door and welcoming you for a drink, some music and a game of pool, or a swim in the farm dam. In weekends you meet the locals here from far and beyond. We are glad to have Thatchwood as our neighbour. Blackhorse is less than a km, for if you want to enjoy the beautiful very different setting, taste some artisanal beer, a glass of wine or gin and/or a good steak. Galloway Gardens is opposite Manyore; check out the Blackhorse website for the events there. Sage&Smoke is open in weekends, a short walk, a good view. Melon Rouge is a bit further on the same Zeekoeihoek road, with good breakfast and lunch and second hand books, antiques, art and very friendly staff. All are at walking distance. Forgotten some shopping? Walk to Noma’s Nook (500 m). The Spar in Magaliesburg is 6 km away.

Galleries, game drives, restaurants; plenty of options in Magaliesburg. Check out the www.welovemagalies.co.za for more tips. African Hills Reserve is recommendable for if you would like to visit the museum (for free!), treat yourself to a game drive or walk to the historic rain dance site. The Joynery and What-the-fig are good restaurants and galleries in the historic buildings of Magaliesburg. Kids love the super special milkshakes and the pool at Hornbill. Our farmhouse has a book with our special tips for the neigbourhood and Magaliesburg, including farms open for hiking.

Experience farm life

When you are at the farm, you can enjoy harvesting vegetables or fruits (if available), help with clearing invasive species, feel at home in the farmhouse, get a farm egg.

Every season has its own delights and dilemmas. You will meet our chicken, many birds and in summer the vervet monkeys. You might meet mongoose, owls, bushbabies, guinea fowl, squirls and a small buck.

There is a fire pit available; you can make a braai or just an outdoor fire. Firewood can be purchased on site (one bag complementary). For cold winter evenings, the indoor fire place can be used.

Do you want to plant a tree or another plant to grow our indigenous food forest? Let us know and we can arrange.

Transport: All tar road to the farm, and a concrete supported track on the farm; small cars welcome. Public transport is possible up to 500 m from the farm gate. Good to know: The road to Rustenburg is giving some noise at the beginning of the evenings (in particular Friday evening) and in the early mornings but otherwise is hardly audible.

Caution: This is farm life: Beware of vervet monkeys and chicken waking you up or stealing your food!

OUR STORY

Washington Nyabeze and Marieke de Groen founded the company Manyore Farmstead in 2022. They longed for a place where nature could inspire, where kids could be more outdoors and adventurous, where climate adaptation was happening, where land would be regenerated for biodiversity and soil improvement, where people (including themselves) could be hands on instead of behind a computer. A place where opportunities could be created for others and people would feel that they are learning. A place not too far from Joburg, as work still needed to be done there. They decided to look for land to start that place and found it in Magaliesburg.

Our farm worker Jacob Molefi Nkomo has been there from the start and is a real Magaliesburger. He is teaching us and learning also and introducing us to other locals to get work done.

We make a step forward each time and have already made also many steps backward in the process. We are learning and enjoying it.

Our name comes from Manyore Mountain. This is the second highest mountain in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe where the Nyabezes lived peacefully with their clan more than a century ago. We learn most when the elders come to visit; they are the real African permaculture farmers!
